What are PTC heat foils?

PTC heat foils are flat, flexible heating elements in which a special heating layer made of PTC material is embedded between the carrier and cover layers.

They only heat up as much as is necessary for the respective application and do not require any additional sensors or control units. This makes them particularly safe, economical and low-maintenance.

PTC heat foils are used wherever uniform, extensive heat is required, e.g. in batteries, technical devices, medical applications or vehicle components.

PTC heat foils: special paste ensures integrated heat regulation

PTC foils are produced using PTC paste (Positive Temperature Coefficient) and conductive silver in a screen printing process. The PTC paste is a special conductive organic substance that contains components with a positive temperature coefficient of electrical resistance.

This property enables the production of heating elements that can regulate their own temperature without external control elements. And this with extremely low construction heights from 200µ.

How does the temperature control work?

  • When current flows through the PTC paste, it heats up.
  • As the temperature rises, the electrical resistance of the paste increases.
  • This increased resistance limits the flow of current, which reduces further heating.
  • This effect leads to a self-regulating heating effect in which the temperature is kept at a stable level.

Technical specifications of the PTC heat foils

Dimensions of 960 mm x 650 mm are possible in ranges from 40 to 120 °C and a maximum voltage of up to 1000 volts. The films consist of several layers, including a PET carrier, a PET film as insulation, PTC paste and conductive silver. Depending on the requirements, an adhesive lamination and foam can be integrated.
